Toyota 86 Bike Rack – The SeaSucker Talon
Caroline contacted us looking for a Toyota 86 bike rack for a single road bike with a quick-release front wheel. The Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ is a car we have featured previously with Jonathan’s Toyota 86 with the SeaSucker Mini Bomber and the custom Mini Bomber Bike Rack for Team Avanti. Having said this, we hadn’t previously documented a single bike rack solution for the Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ. After discussing Caroline’s requirements we recommended the SeaSucker Talon 1-Bike Rack. As her bike has a quick-release front wheel the standard SeaSucker Talon kit is all that was required. If boot space becomes limited SeaSucker has several front-wheel carrier options.
Mounting the SeaSucker Talon on the Toyota 86
The Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ has a valley in the middle of the roof. Whilst this does pose a challenge for the SeaSucker Mini Bomber 2-Bike Rack, however, it’s no problem for the SeaSucker Talon 1-Bike Rack. The smaller “L” shaped mainboard opens up many more mounting options. Minimising overall height was a priority for Caroline. Hence our recombination was to install the Talon mainboard partially on the roof and the back window as shown in the photos.
This will place the rear wheel strap on the front edge of the boot lid. This is also largely dependant on the length of your bike. As a guide, the typical length of an adult bike, measured from the front forks to the back of the frame is approx 1.1 to 1.2 metres.
Customer Feedback
After overcoming her initial apprehension Caroline has since completed he first trip from Cairns to the Gold Coast with her new bike rack. She noted, “It was a funny trip as I noticed vehicles that just kept their distance behind me but it did stay firmly on the roof from Cairns to the Gold Coast..” Just look out for motorists who try and pull you over so they can check out the almost invisible bike rack holding down your bike!
